Gas Fireplaces

A gas fireplace needs annual service, it has to be done by a licensed gas technician in Ontario, and the thing most often wrong is the venting.

Short answer

Annual service covers the burner and pilot, the glass and gasket, the venting, the logs and ember bed placement, the fan and the controls, plus a combustion and carbon monoxide check. In Ontario gas work is regulated and must be done by a certified gas technician — confirming that is a reasonable question to ask.

What the service covers

Burner and pilot assembly cleaned, and the thermocouple or thermopile checked, which is the usual cause of a pilot that will not stay lit.

The glass removed, cleaned and the gasket inspected, because on a direct-vent unit the glass is part of the sealed combustion chamber and a failed gasket is a safety matter.

Logs and ember material repositioned correctly, because logs moved out of position cause sooting and can block the burner.

Venting checked end to end, including the exterior termination.

The fan, the blower and the controls, including the remote and the wall switch.

And a combustion and carbon monoxide check, which is the part that establishes the appliance is safe rather than just working.

The glass gasket

A direct-vent gas fireplace is a sealed appliance: combustion air comes in and exhaust goes out through the vent, and the glass seals the firebox from the room. A failed or mispositioned gasket breaks that seal, which can put combustion products into the room. It is a cheap part and it is the item most often found wrong.

Who can do it in Ontario

Gas work in Ontario is regulated and requires a certified gas technician.

That is a specific certification rather than a general trade licence, and it is a fair thing to ask to see.

The chimney and venting work on a masonry chimney may involve both a sweep and a gas technician.

A general handyman is not the right trade for a gas appliance, however simple the job looks.

The appliance manufacturer instructions govern the service and the parts.

And work on a gas appliance may require a permit depending on the scope, which the technician will know.

Signs it needs attention

Sooting on the glass or on the logs, which means incomplete combustion and is the clearest warning.

A pilot that will not stay lit, which is usually the thermocouple or thermopile.

A smell of gas, which is an immediate call to the gas utility rather than to a service company.

A carbon monoxide alarm activation, which means out of the house and 911.

A flame that is lifting off the burner, roaring, or a different colour from normal.

And condensation or staining around the exterior vent termination, which on a direct-vent unit points at the venting.
